                                             2017  Mountain Soul Ministry Report

Mountain Soul was formed in May 2015 by a group responding to an invitation from the Senior Warden of Christ Church, Barbara Halsey. She expressed a desire for Christ Church to reach out to the community through music. A committee was formed to organize and conduct the Mountain Soul gatherings. Sarah Updike agreed to be the chair person, and the committee has met monthly since May. Statistics show that churches that are growing are the ones that offer non-traditional services, which are vibrant, engaging, and provide a variety of music in addition to traditional organ/piano music.

The mission of Mountain Soul is to strive to be an open space for ALL people in our community to engage in a worship experience which is grounded in Americana/Roots-Based music and is housed at Christ Church . The plan is to offer 12 monthly services, usually scheduled on the last Sunday of each month. There will be times we must change our date to accommodate the schedules of our musicians. There will be 8 regular services with 30 minutes of worship and an hour of concert by our house band, Bandit's Roost and other talented musicians in the area and state. The other 4 services will be "concerts" with 15 minutes of worship, and a 90 minute concert, which will feature nationally known musicians. We are seeking pledges to pay for the concerts, which are much more expensive to bring to our church. You will be hearing about this soon.

These services are not intended to replace or reshape our Sunday morning worship in any way. It is not purely a concert series geared to entertain. Instead, it is another format for reaching out to people who may or may not be engaged in traditional church. It will encourage laity to get involved in the service, it will support the growth of the Arts in Alleghany County, it will provide a way to open our church to the community, and most importantly, it will answer the call of Jesus to take our ministries beyond the church walls.

As of the end of December, we have offered full concerts by Martha Bassett, Gretchen Peters, Frederick Moyer, and Amythyst Kiah. Our other services enjoyed the music of : Tim Lewis and Ava Miller, Bandit's Roost, and Gypsy Laurel. Attendance was the greatest at our Gretchen Peter's concert with 120, and the lowest at the Frederick Moyer concert with 59. On the coldest, rainiest, night of all, 65 attended to hear Bandit's Roost. We are averaging 20-25 non-members at each service.
